The Canyon is the seventh studio album by American stone ring the Used. The album was released every bit double album on October 27, 2017, through Hopeless Records[5] and is defended to Tregen, a friend of Bert McCracken, who shot himself in Provo Canyon after coming off his anti-depressants for most a week.[six] It is the only studio album to feature guitarist Justin Shekoski since Quinn Allman'due south difference in 2015.[5] It was highly acclaimed past critics and fans akin and actualization on many best-of-the-year lists, though it only peaked at 50 on the Billboard 200.

Groundwork and production [edit]

On Feb 2, 2015, the ring announced that guitarist Quinn Allman be on a temporary go out of absenteeism for a year; Justin Shekoski of Saosin was brought in to fill Allman's role.[7] On Nov 19, the group officially parted ways with Allman and made Shekoski a full-time member.[8] Following this, the group went on tour to gloat 15 years of existence a band in April and May 2016.[9] Farther dates were added extending information technology into June,[10] earlier a second leg in August and September was added.[11]

The Canyon is the group'southward first anthology to characteristic production from Ross Robinson.[v] Previous albums utilized John Feldmann (with the exception of Artwork, produced by Matt Squire). The album was recorded using analog equipment with no click-tracks or bankroll vocals to achieve a raw sound.[12] Some of the song titles reference David Foster Wallace, Syria and The Odyssey, amongst others.[13]

The Canyon is also the group'south first and only studio album with guitarist Justin Shekoski. On Shekoski'due south improver to the band, in an interview with Billboard, lead vocalist Bert McCracken stated Shekoski'south "lust for life and passion for art is inspiring. Information technology'southward been a fire underneath The Used. Information technology'south a new chapter of a make new book" and "since Justin became a part of the Used it'south been nothing but exciting for the next pace."[14] The band members were inspired following the live recording of Alive and Acoustic at the Palace (2016), and wanted to reverberate the live feel in their new anthology.[xv]

Release [edit]

On September seven, 2017, The Coulee was announced for release the following calendar month; alongside this, a music video was released for the first single, "Over and Once again."[16] The music video was directed by Lisa Isle of mann and included trip the light fantastic toe choreography with bright visuals.[17] In October and November 2017, the group went on a headlining Usa tour with support from Glassjaw.[18] A lyric video was released for "Ascent Upward Lights" on October 23, 2017.[19] The Coulee was released on October 27, 2017 through Hopeless Records.[xviii] A music video was released for "Rise Upwardly Lights" on November 3, 2017 which besides depicted interpretive dancing "seemingly meant for their advanced dystopian anthem."[20]

The grouping were due to continue a European tour in Feb 2018,[21] but the shows were postponed until Baronial 2018 due to a "family expiry."[22]

Following this, the group went on a headlining US tour with support from Ruby-red Sun Rise and Fever 333 in April and May 2018.[23] On May 1, a music video was released for "The Nexus".[24] Directed by Lisa Isle of man, the video is a love story between two "identities contesting for supremacy and independence only to be locked in patterned loops together throughout time told through experimental movement."[25] The band and so performed on the Warped Tour in June and July.[23] The group also appeared at the Reading and Leeds Festivals in August 2018.[26]

The album received positive reception post-obit its release, with Alternative Press claiming the anthology has "A vibrancy and vulnerability not felt since the Used's 2002 cocky-titled debut," and stating that the ring'southward new guitarist Justin Shekoski "has breathed new life into the songwriting."[32] McCracken's delivery of the lyrics coupled with Shekoski's melodies and riffs, showed "The Used have fully realized their wild imagination" and critics noted "this collection of songs are more compelling and moving than annihilation heard previously from the band."[33]

The anthology appears in AllMusic's 2017 Year In Review: Favorite Punk Albums,[34] Alternative Press 'southward The xl best albums of 2017,[35] Drowned in Sound 'southward Album of 2017: Staff edit[36] and Kerrang! 's Albums of 2017 lists.[37]
